Match three numbers: pitch, gauge, and drive-link count. All three must match the stamp on your current bar. If even one is off, the chain won't fit safely.
Pitch is the distance between any three consecutive rivets, divided by two. Gauge is the thickness of the drive links — measure with a caliper or check the bar stamp. Our guide covers both in detail.
With proper tension and occasional sharpening, an aftermarket chain lasts 3–5 cords of firewood or about 5 hours of active cutting — roughly the same as OEM.
Absolutely sharpen it. A quality replacement chain can be sharpened 3–5 times before the cutters are too short. Keep a round file matched to the cutter diameter.
