Craftsman V20 Chainsaw Chain Guide — Every Model, Every Chain Size
Craftsman’s V20 cordless platform includes four chainsaw-type tools, each with a different bar length and chain size. If you own more than one — or you are shopping for replacement chains and want to stock the right ones — this guide covers every V20 chainsaw model, the exact chain specs for each, and what you need to know about cross-compatibility.
The good news: all four V20 chainsaws use standard 3/8” LP (low profile) chain, which is one of the most common chain types on the market. That means aftermarket options are plentiful and affordable.
The complete V20 chainsaw lineup
1. V20 12-Inch Chainsaw
The largest saw in the V20 family and the one most homeowners reach for when handling fallen branches, firewood, or small tree work.
- Bar length: 12 inches
- Chain pitch: 3/8” LP
- Chain gauge: 0.050”
- Drive links: 45
2. V20 10-Inch Chainsaw
A more compact option for lighter cutting. Popular for storm cleanup and trimming.
- Bar length: 10 inches
- Chain pitch: 3/8” LP
- Chain gauge: 0.050”
- Drive links: 40
3. V20 6-Inch Pruning Saw
A one-handed pruning saw designed for cutting branches up to about 5 inches in diameter. Ideal for garden maintenance and orchard work.
- Bar length: 6 inches
- Chain pitch: 3/8” LP
- Chain gauge: 0.050”
- Drive links: Approximately 28 (verify with your model)
4. V20 8-Inch Pole Saw
An extended-reach pole saw for overhead limbing without a ladder.
- Bar length: 8 inches
- Chain pitch: 3/8” LP
- Chain gauge: 0.050”
- Drive links: Approximately 34 (verify with your model)
What all four models share
Every V20 chainsaw uses:
- 3/8” LP pitch — The low-profile version of 3/8” chain, which has smaller cutters and drive links than full 3/8” chain. Do not confuse LP with standard 3/8” — they are not interchangeable.
- 0.050” gauge — This is the thickness of the drive links that ride in the bar groove. It is the most common gauge across consumer-grade chainsaws.
- Standard chain construction — No proprietary designs. Any chain manufacturer’s 3/8” LP, 0.050” gauge chain will fit as long as the drive link count matches your bar.
The only spec that changes between models is the drive link count, which is determined by the bar length.
V20 battery compatibility
All V20 batteries are interchangeable across every Craftsman V20 tool. Whether you have a 2.0Ah, 4.0Ah, or 5.0Ah V20 battery, it works in all four chainsaw models. The larger packs provide more runtime, which matters most for the 12-inch and 10-inch saws that draw more current during heavier cuts.
This universal compatibility across the V20 platform means you do not need dedicated batteries for each tool. A set of two 4.0Ah V20 packs can rotate between your chainsaw, drill, impact driver, and any other V20 tool.
Aftermarket chain options
Because all four V20 chainsaws use standard 3/8” LP, 0.050” gauge specifications, aftermarket chain options are extensive:
- Oregon S-series chains — Widely available and a reliable aftermarket choice. Oregon S40 (10”), S45 (12”), and similar designations match the drive link counts for Craftsman bars.
- Carlton chains — Another reputable aftermarket brand with 3/8” LP options.
- Multi-packs — Buying a 3-pack of chains for your most-used model (usually the 12-inch) saves money per chain and ensures you always have a sharp spare ready.
When ordering, always verify the drive link count — not just the bar length. Two different manufacturers’ 12-inch bars can require different drive link counts depending on the bar design. Count the links on your current chain if you are unsure.
Sharpening vs replacing
For the 12-inch and 10-inch models, sharpening the chain a few times before replacing it is cost-effective. A basic round file in the correct diameter (typically 5/32” for 3/8” LP chain) and a file guide will extend chain life significantly.
For the 6-inch pruner and 8-inch pole saw, chains are short enough that sharpening takes only a few minutes — but the chains are also inexpensive enough that some homeowners simply replace them when dull.
What this means for replacement parts
All Craftsman V20 chainsaws use standard 3/8” LP, 0.050” gauge chain — no proprietary specs to worry about. Match the drive link count to your bar length and you are set.
