STIHL Chainsaw Chain Size Chart: Why Bar Length Is Not Enough

STIHL replacement chain searches often start with a bar length: 14 inch, 16 inch, 18 inch, or 20 inch. That is useful, but it is not a complete chain size. A correct loop still needs the exact pitch, gauge, and drive-link count shown on the bar, manual, or old chain package.

Quick rule

Do not buy a STIHL chain from bar length alone. Match all four:

CheckWhat to verify
Bar lengthThe cutting length class, such as 16” or 18”
PitchCommonly 3/8 Picco, .325, or 3/8
GaugeCommonly .043, .050, .058, or .063
Drive linksThe loop count, often written as DL

If any one of those is wrong, the chain may not tension, may bind in the bar groove, or may not match the sprocket.

Where to find the size

Look at the guide bar near the mount slot. Most bars stamp a spec line close to the saw body. Clean the area first; oil and sawdust can hide the marks. A typical stamp may show the pitch, gauge, and drive-link count together.

If the stamp is gone, count the drive links on the old loop and confirm pitch and gauge from the manual. See how to read the bar stamp and pitch vs gauge explained for the full decoding process.

Common buyer mistake

Two STIHL saws can both run 16 inch bars and still use different chains. Small homeowner saws may use low-profile chain, while larger saws may use .325 or standard 3/8. The product title may mention STIHL and 16 inch, but that still does not guarantee fit.

Buying checklist

Before ordering, write the chain spec in one line:

bar length + pitch + gauge + drive links

Then compare that line against the listing title, description, and fitment notes. If the listing only says “fits STIHL 16 inch chainsaws,” treat it as incomplete.

FAQ

Can I use an Oregon chain on a STIHL saw?

Yes, if pitch, gauge, drive-link count, and safety profile match the bar and sprocket.

Is 3/8 Picco the same as standard 3/8?

No. Low-profile or Picco chain is a different family. Match the exact pitch from the bar.
